Interests

I love life! Happiness and joy abound in my life.
There are so many activities I enjoy and appreciate; this page shares only a few.

I believe in taking good care of and developing my body, mind, and spirit.
Life is to be  lived to its fullest. Neglect any area and your entire being suffers.

Target practice with my 40-caliber semi-automatic...excellent marksman!

History and science fascinate me! Whenever I travel, I particularly appreciate
visiting historical sites and musuems. Art galleries are also a favorite.
I also love going to zoos and animal parks.
Since history particularly interest me,  I appreciate reading and viewing historically accurate books & films.

I am an avid reader.  I particularly appreciate the following writers/poets:  Gore Vidal, Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Walt Whitman, Richard Bach, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
Alan Watts, Bertrand Russell, Stanley Kunitz, Italo Calvino, Frederic Bastiat, and the writings in The Tao, the I'Ching, The Analects of Confucius, the Bible, and the writings of the saints.

Gore Vidal is one of my favorite authors, and I regard him as one of the finest historians and writers of our time. I was pleased to have interviewed him in 2005.
You may read my interview of him, along with reviews/commentary I've written of Vidal here.

When not working, I enjoy and appreciate a variety of activities:  hiking/backpacking, aerobic and anaerobic (weightlifting) exercise, astronomy, gardening, cooking, acting, singing, reading, chess, music, art, films, etc.

I believe in enjoying life…and good drink and food is one of life’s pleasures to be savored, as the Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli stated:  “Eating is not merely a material pleasure. Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship. It is of great importance to the morale.” I wholeheartedly agree! Italian food is a favorite, and Mexican, as I love all manner of pasta, cheeses, and love vegetables/spices. As I do enjoy good meals, I also enjoy cooking them. And I make delicious desserts. (I have been a vegetarian most of my life out of my reverence for all life.)
As for drink: I appreciate good flavorful  beers and ales, wine (especially Port), and a variety of mixed drinks - two favorites: Margaritas and Whiskey Sours.

I exercise regularly and love it!

I appreciate an impressive man...

Music I appreciate, among others: Classical--Mozart, Strauss, Chopin, Brahms, Wagner, Grieg, Handel (I appreciate a variety of classical); Stevie Nicks; Bonnie Raitt; Roy Orbison, The Eagles, a variety from the 60's, Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Juice Newton, Pam Tillis, The Judds, Lorrie Morgan, Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kate Wolf, John Denver; Gordon Macrae; German traditional folk songs & marches; The music of Ireland, the music of Italy, instrumentals: harp, flute, and piano.

I could get used to this!

I also enjoy singing, and have performed several concerts at events, coffee houses, and nightclubs. I also perform at Karaoke establishments when I get the chance.

I do enjoy good films! Some of my favorite actors include Anthony Hopkins, Colm Feore, Liam Neeson, Tim Roth, Aidan Quinn, and Michael Douglas.

I respect and deeply appreciate fine character actors.

Take Tim Roth, for example, his eclectic body of work
is impressive - spanning many years - and in an incredible diversity of films and roles.
My favorite films with him are his serious dramatic roles, but I have enjoyed everything I've seen him in from comedy to crime to mystery and of course, the serious dramas.  (I own many if not most of his films, searching for some of the few I've yet to acquire, and looking forward to "Broken.") No matter the character he portrays, his performance is powerful, thoughtful, as his entire demeanor, facial expressions, etc. communicate just as much, perhaps more, than the dialogue. I have a deep appreciation for his fine work, and for his communication through his acting/directing as well as his interviews expressing important ideas and matters. He is outspoken for peace, I appreciate that. It is always a pleasure to see him in whatever story he appears in.

I invite you to My Tim Roth Page to learn more about him and his films.
